Two spins make a complete first quantum experiment
An independent QubitWire lesson on this topic, based on the source reading below. It is not a transcript or a summary of the recording.
A pair of interacting spins is small enough to analyze carefully and rich enough to introduce a useful scientific workflow. One term in the model can favor opposite orientations, while another favors alignment along a different measurement direction. Those preferences need not be simultaneously satisfied, producing behavior that depends on their relative strengths.
The episode’s written lesson uses this setting to introduce Qiskit’s measurement-oriented primitives. A sampler returns outcomes from repeated circuit executions. An estimator targets expectation values of specified observables. An energy estimate may combine several such observables because the model’s Hamiltonian contains multiple terms.
The distinction matters when reading a result. A histogram is a record of outcomes in a chosen measurement setting. An expectation value summarizes a particular observable. Neither is automatically a full reconstruction of the state. The preparation, basis and repeated-run budget determine what can be inferred.
For a first project, keep the model small enough that an exact classical calculation is available. Agreement then provides a check on the implementation, and discrepancies can teach something about compilation, finite sampling or hardware noise. The aim is to understand an entire experiment, from model to interpreted result.
Questions to work through
Why can energy require several measurements?
Different terms in the Hamiltonian can correspond to observables needing different measurement settings. Their estimated contributions are combined into the reported energy.
What does a sampler result describe?
It describes sampled outcomes for the executed measurement. The basis and circuit specify what those outcomes mean.
Why use an exact classical answer at first?
It provides a clear reference for checking code and interpretation. A learning experiment gains value from being independently understandable.
