Allstate and IBM Test a Hybrid Insurance-Portfolio Workflow
The research combines quantum-generated candidate portfolios with classical repair and compares results against classical methods.

Allstate and IBM are testing a hybrid approach to selecting insurance-style portfolios, where correlated risks and practical constraints complicate the choices. The challenge is the relationship between those risks: selecting a portfolio is harder than choosing each item independently.
The preprint research generates candidate portfolios on IBM Heron, then repairs them classically. In comparisons with classical methods, the collaboration reports that tested methods matched optimal solutions on instances with up to 75 items.
Matching an optimal classical result does not establish quantum advantage. The findings come from a research comparison, not demonstrated production underwriting. Larger representative instances, repeated trials and complete runtime and cost accounting are needed to assess whether the hybrid approach adds value.
