What it does. Where it fits.
Reconfigurable deployed-fiber network with photon sources, detectors, timing and polarization control.
Who should look closer
Photonics teams seeking staffed field tests, equipment interoperability work and network characterization.
QubitWire’s editorial assessment of practical fit.Contracted hourly or annual access
EPB offers staffed workspace and configurable network time through direct booking. Availability and project requirements are agreed with the operator.
Check the current access route ↗What has been demonstrated
An ORNL/UTC campaign used EPB links to maintain polarization control for over 30 hours. The paper reports 0.94 ± 0.03 relative fidelity, while ORNL identifies the short metropolitan links and collaborating sites.
What remains unresolved
This assessment covers the network testbed, not the planned computing facility. One research campaign does not establish an all-purpose quantum internet or a commercial uptime guarantee.
The next question to watch
Can further deployments report longer operating periods, changing loss conditions and independently reproduced multi-vendor workloads?
A research question, not a promised milestone.QubitWire coverage

Sources & evidence
- EPB Quantum Network access and configurations ↗Organization-originated source · Publication date not stated
EPB describes a staffed, reconfigurable fiber testbed with entangled-photon sources, timing, detectors and switches; hourly access and annual contracts are offered.
- ORNL partnership with EPB tests new method for protecting quantum networks ↗Organization-originated source · 13 Jan 2025
ORNL reports a joint field experiment maintaining entangled-signal transmission for over 30 hours between UTC and two EPB nodes, each about half a mile away. This is research-partner reporting.
- Continuous automatic polarization channel stabilization from heterodyne detection of coexisting dim reference signals ↗Organization-originated source · 16 Dec 2024
The peer-reviewed study reports metropolitan-network polarization stabilization with average relative fidelity 0.94 ± 0.03 over more than 30 hours. Relative fidelity is not an absolute entangled-state fidelity or a service guarantee.
- EPB Quantum facilities and availability ↗Organization-originated source · Publication date not stated
The operator labels its quantum network available now and separately describes quantum computing facilities as coming in 2026; the two access claims must not be conflated.
