IBM Demonstrates Two Connected Modular Cryogenic Cells

Box-shaped cryostats offer shorter interconnect paths and more wiring room for future multi-processor quantum systems.

IBM reports that it has coupled and operated two modular cryogenic cell prototypes at its Poughkeepsie facility, testing a different layout for the cooling infrastructure around quantum processors. The cells are box-shaped and sit side by side. That arrangement shortens connection paths compared with separate cylindrical cryostats.

IBM specifies approximately 0.53 square metres of wiring area and 2.75 cubic metres of vacuum volume per cell.

What IBM has reported is a cooling-infrastructure demonstration. It has not reported a completed fault-tolerant computation across multiple chips. That larger ambition still depends on processor interconnects working, cooling remaining stable under heavier loads and connected hardware performing reliable computation.
