NEC Helped Launch the Quantum Race. Its Hardware Exit Is a Reality Check.

A newly reported withdrawal shows how different a scientific milestone can be from a sustainable hardware business.

A company can help create a technology without deciding to keep building it forever. NEC’s reported withdrawal from quantum-computer hardware is a striking example.

Jiji Press reported on September 7 that NEC had ended hardware development at the end of March, citing people familiar with the matter. The report linked the decision to the difficult route towards practical use and profitability. It also said NEC would continue technology development involving quantum mechanics.[1]

Why NEC’s history makes this stand out

NEC researchers were behind a landmark 1999 Nature paper demonstrating coherent control in a superconducting single-Cooper-pair box. That work is part of the early scientific foundation of superconducting quantum computing.[2]

The contrast is the story: an organization associated with an important physical demonstration can later decide that pursuing a hardware business no longer fits its priorities.

What the exit does, and does not, tell us

A withdrawal is evidence about a company’s willingness to keep funding a particular effort. It is not, by itself, an experiment showing that quantum computing is impossible. Nor should ending hardware development be stretched into a claim that every quantum-related activity has stopped. The useful questions are commercial and practical. How long can an organization support development before meaningful revenue arrives? Which parts of the technology does it want to own? What level of uncertainty is it prepared to carry?[1]

Those questions belong in quantum coverage alongside new chips and ambitious roadmaps. The science, the engineering and the business do not all move at the same speed. For readers following the field, this is a reason to ask better questions about commercialization, not to declare the whole race over.
