WHY INCLUDED

Develops the computer-science foundations of quantum networks, linking entanglement distribution and quantum communication to software that can run applications on connected quantum processors.

QuTechQuTechNature

Wehner works on making quantum networks programmable. Her research extends from communication and cryptography to the operating systems and architectures that coordinate quantum processors, classical messages and limited quantum memory. That systems perspective matters because connecting two devices does not automatically make a usable network. Her contribution combines a research agenda for a quantum internet with demonstrated application software, including collaborative work on an operating system tested on real quantum network nodes.

Defining contributions

Work, in context
  1. 2018

A research vision for the quantum internet

With David Elkouss and Ronald Hanson, Wehner co-authored a Science review setting out a vision for quantum internet development. The publication connects the quantum-network research agenda to the goal of communication enabled by shared quantum resources.

  2. 2025

    QNodeOS for quantum network applications

Wehner co-authored the paper introducing QNodeOS, an operating-system architecture for running high-level applications on quantum network nodes. The team demonstrated delegated computation between diamond-based nodes and a driver for a trapped-ion node, separating application software from hardware-specific control.

Co-author of the paper reporting QNodeOS and its collaborative demonstrations.

Keep in perspective

QNodeOS is a demonstrated research system on small experimental nodes; it is not described as a deployed global quantum internet.
