THE QUANTUM BRIEFING · VOLUME XXVI

What happens between a quantum result and something you can use?

A quieter silicon qubit takes more power to turn. A simulated generator spends most of its measurements on the last two steps. Four photons might connect four distant spins in one operation. This issue also follows two decisions facing banks as they prepare for new cryptography, from testing a customer login to choosing the chip in a payment card.

Silicon qubits stayed coherent longer but needed a stronger drive

In one echo test, the industrial qubits kept their phase for about 200 microseconds, compared with 70 in the reference device. They also needed more power from the microwave source to rotate at the same rate.

Hardware experiment, October 30. The devices differed in fabrication and magnet layout. A single-qubit gate benchmark leaves wafer yield unmeasured.

A simulated quantum generator puts measurement noise to work

Across 20 generation steps, the simulated circuit saved its most precise measurements for the end. Spending the same number at every step left too few for the final decisions.

Simulation, October 30. The fourfold comparison uses an evenly allocated budget on a synthetic task. The much larger 5,300-fold figure uses a high-precision reference.

Hong Kong gives banks a plan for replacing vulnerable cryptography

Hong Kong’s regulator and HKUST released a manual and four planning tools for banks. In the survey behind the readiness index, about half the banks reported having no formal post-quantum plan.

Joint HKMA and HKUST announcement, November 2. The sector’s 2.3 out of 10 measures progress on preparation. The next survey is scheduled for the second quarter of 2028.

IDEMIA adds post-quantum cryptography to a payment card platform

IDEMIA says it can give payment applications access to post-quantum cryptography on a card. The supplier’s announcement names no bank using the feature in customer transactions.

Supplier announcement, October 29, republished November 2. No product certificate number or customer rollout appears in the announcement.

A four-photon measurement could link distant qubits in one step

In one proposed use, four distant spins each emit an entangled photon. A joint measurement consumes the photons but can leave all four spins entangled.

Theory, October 30. For ideal inputs and detection, the four-photon measurement’s calculated success probability rises from 1/8 to 9/32.

Which result would still hold in the next setting?

For the chip, ask about a larger array. For the AI model, ask for a real hardware run. For the banking stories, look for a tested migration. For the photons, count the cost of a usable output.

Reader guideBriefing: read a dated edition and a live preview for different purposesUse a fixed edition for its original selection, the archive for history and the preview for its currently displayed status.Context reviewed

A dated briefing preserves an editorial selection for that edition. Its linked articles can acquire corrections or additional context later, so the edition date and an article’s update date answer different questions. Use the archive to revisit what was selected at a particular time and the live preview to inspect the current selection.

When comparing editions, look for a changed claim or new evidence rather than assuming every repeated organization has produced a new technical result. Record the source date, the reported event date and the reason the item matters together. This makes a useful chronology without treating a new publication date as a new experiment.

The archive, preview and feed routes provide different ways to read the publication. A visible edition or feed is not a promise of email delivery, an individual alert or a fixed future publishing schedule. Check each route’s own description when choosing how to return.

Questions to take with you

Why can a linked article change while the edition stays dated?

The edition preserves its original selection. The article can carry later corrections or context. Reading both dates prevents those two records from being confused.

Does reading or bookmarking an edition join email delivery?

No such action is described here. Email signup and status have their own existing route and choices; this module does not submit or confirm a subscription.
